100% Renewable Ibiza

With Ibiza enjoying more than 300 days of sunshine a year, it’s hard to believe less than 1% of the island’s power comes from solar energy. To encourage households and businesses to install solar and speed up the island’s transition to renewable energy, we recently coordinated a study, ‘Photovoltaic Solar Energy: Status, Cases and Opportunities in Ibiza.’

There has never been a better time for clean and sustainable solar energy. The technologies are mature, affordable and profitable. If you’re thinking about installing solar, the step-by-step guides, and links to lists of installation companies, provided in this study offer helpful information and advice.

Using the examples of a single-family home, café/bar, restaurant, supermarket, hotel and tourist apartment complex, we showed the installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar facilities is a profitable investment where returns can be realised within 6 to 11 years.

One of the biggest barriers to investments in solar is perceptions. Uncertainties created by Spain’s central government, unhelpful legislation and rumours about the so-called “sun tax” (back-up tolls) have had an impact on the uptake of solar energy in Ibiza.

Despite this, the study noted the legal framework is stable, local government is supportive and, with current installation and electricity prices, it is cost effective. Subsidies are also available from the Balearic Government (around €2,000 for private homes), making an investment even more attractive.

And the “sun-tax,” which is currently not applied to self-consumption facilities in Ibiza, is not a significant cost barrier.

With transport accounting for 40% of the energy consumed on the island, electric vehicles play an important role in the transition to clean and renewable energy. The Balearic Government and Ibiza council both promote electric cars, offering free charging, free parking in blue zones as well as tax credits. Although electric mobility will create an increase in demand for electricity, we need to ensure this demand is met by renewable sources.

PV solar energy and e-mobility will reduce Ibiza’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels, and the shift will also make a positive contribution to the local economy.

By leading the way to a 100% renewable Ibiza, we will also strengthen Alianza Mar Blava’s efforts to stop oil and gas prospecting in the Mediterranean Sea. So let’s be the change we want to see.
